Minister of Communications Dina Pule, Overall Winner Stephen Cranston and Telkom Group CEO Pinky Moholi
Financial Mail journalist, Stephen Cranston was named the “2012 Telkom Classic Business Journalist of the Year”.
The R75 000 award and trophy were presented to him by Telkom CEO Pinky Moholi and Minister of Communications Dina Pule at a ceremony in Hyde Park on Wednesday 26th September.
The Journalist of the Year awards are unique to South Africa in that entries do not need to be submitted, but are selected from published financial writing in print and on the internet.
These are the third awards. Last year’s winner was Marc Ashton from Finweek and Fin24.
The judges were Chris Gilmour from Absa Investments and Jeremy Sampson from Interbrand Sampson.
Cranston was commended by the judges for his authoritative coverage of SABMiller and its CEO Graham Mackay. He also won a sectoral award for his coverage of companies, and the monthly award for June.
Duncan McLeod was joint winner in the ICT category for work published in the Financial Mail, alongside Simon Dingle for his work published in Fin24. Bruce Whitfield won the award in the personal finance and money category for his reporting in Finweek. Jan de Lange of Fin24 won in the Economy sector for his article “Eskom mulled buying back”, while Claire Bisseker won the award in the Small and Medium Enterprise sector for an article in the Financial Mail titled “In the shadow”.
Monthly awards were also given out.
